2018 Ford Explorer Review

When people talk about full-size SUVs, they usually bring up a good performance, a spacious interior, and plenty of features. One popular option is the Ford Explorer. But to help decide if it's right for your drives around Streator, Morris, or Dwight, you'll need to learn more about it first.

In this review from DeLong Ford Inc., you'll discover the reasons why the 2018 Ford Explorer sets the standards for full-size SUVs, and where you can go to try one out yourself.

2018 Ford Explorer

There are a few minor changes to this year's 2018 Explorer model. These include a few tweaks to the front and rear styling, the revised availability of a number of features and options, and an integrated available 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

Plus, it's available in five trims: the base level, XLT, Limited, Sport, and range-topping Platinum.

2018 Explorer Performance

There are a number of different engine configurations you can choose from on the new Explorer, depending on the trim levels and options you pick. The base engine is a 3.5L V6 that puts out 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. Also available is a turbocharged 2.3L Ecoboost® I-4 with 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.

Next up, at the Sport level, is a 3.5L turbocharged V6 that delivers 365 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. This trim also offers a towing package that allows the vehicle to handle up to 5,000 pounds, when properly equipped.

Ford Media & Technology

The technology is just as impressive as everything else on the new Explorer. Even at the base level, you get the Ford SYNC® voice command interface to control all the infotainment options without needing to use your hands or fiddle with dials. You also get cruise control, a power driver seat, and Bluetooth® integration.

Stepping up from there gets you a range of extra features, including:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • SYNC® 3 technology interface with smartphone app integration
  • 12-speaker Sony® sound system
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel

Putting the U in SUV

Too many sport utility vehicles ignore the U part of SUV. This is not the case with Ford. Utility-wise, the 2018 Explorer offers plenty of cargo and storage space. The center console is cavernous, and there's a large covered forward bin. In the back, with the seats folded down, you can get a massive 81.7 cubic feet of cargo space to hold all your needed items.
